So Why?

Privacy Policy

Effective 14 October 2026

Data Not CollectedThere is no Blooming Island server, no account to create and no analytics in the app. Your habits, schedules and the reasons you write down live on your iPhone and in your own private iCloud, where we have no way to look.

Who we are

So Why? (Bundle ID com.blooming-island.SoWhy) is made by Roman Kravtsov, an independent developer publishing as Blooming Island ("we"). Under data protection law we are the data controller for the app, although, as described below, no personal data ever reaches us. You can reach us atsupport@blooming-island.com.

What the app stores, and where

Everything you put into So Why? stays with you. That includes:

  • the habits you create and the schedules you set for them;
  • whether you marked something done or not done;
  • the free-text reasons you write when you didn't do a thing;
  • what you write in the weekly retro;
  • your settings inside the app.

All of it is stored on your device with SwiftData and synced through theprivate CloudKit database in your own iCloud account. That database belongs to your Apple Account. Apple designed it so that the developer of an app cannot read it: we can't open it, query it or be handed a copy of it. Sync exists so your own devices agree with each other.

There is no public or shared CloudKit database in this app, and no other backend of any kind.

What else is kept on the device

Besides your habit data, the app keeps three small things locally in UserDefaults: whether you have finished onboarding, a cached copy of your subscription status so the app knows what to unlock when it's offline, and your settings for the reminder about a trial ending. None of it leaves the device and none of it identifies you.

Accounts

There is no sign-up and no login. So Why? never asks for an email address, name, phone number or password.

Notifications

Reminders are local notifications, scheduled on your device by the system (UNUserNotificationCenter) from the schedule you set. Nothing is sent from a server to trigger them. When you answer from the Lock Screen, the answer goes directly into the app's local store.

The app also receives silent notifications from CloudKit, which is how iOS tells a device that something changed and it's time to sync. Apple delivers them between your own devices and your own iCloud. Their contents are not visible to us.

No tracking, no analytics, no ads

So Why? contains no analytics SDK, no crash-reporting service, no advertising and no third-party SDKs. The advertising identifier (IDFA) is never requested, so the App Tracking Transparency prompt never appears. We don't profile you, don't track you across apps or websites, and don't sell or share anything with data brokers. We have no way of knowing which habits you keep or how often you open the app.

Purchases

Premium features are bought through Apple's In-App Purchase system. There are three products: an annual subscription (Premium Yearly, which may come with a free introductory trial), a weekly subscription (Premium Weekly), and a one-time purchase (So Why? Premium).

Apple handles the payment. We never see or store your card details, billing address or Apple Account. The app learns from Apple, on your device, whether your entitlement is active.

Deleting your data

In the app, open Profile and tap Erase All Data. That wipes everything from the device and from your iCloud, on every device signed in to the same Apple Account. It can't be undone.

Deleting the app removes it and its local data from that device. To remove the iCloud copy as well, use Erase All Data before you delete the app, or remove the app's data from iCloud in Settings under your Apple Account.

No deletion request is needed: there is no copy of your data on our side. If you have a question about any of this, write to support@blooming-island.com.

Children

So Why? is not directed at children under 13, or under 16 where that is the relevant age, and we don't knowingly collect data from them, as we don't collect data from anyone. If a child has used the app, their entries are on their device and in their iCloud, and Erase All Data removes them.

If you are in the EEA or the UK (GDPR)

The GDPR gives you rights over personal data a company holds about you. We hold none. Everything you enter is processed on your own device and in your own iCloud, under your own Apple Account. Where a legal basis is relevant at all, it is performance of the contract between you and us: running the app you asked for (Article 6(1)(b)).

You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection. In practice you exercise all of them yourself, because you hold the only copy: you can read, edit or delete any habit, reason or retro answer at any moment, and Erase All Data removes everything. An access request sent to us can only be answered with what this page says, as we have nothing of yours to produce.

We make no international transfers of your data, because we receive none. Storage and sync are provided by Apple's iCloud underApple's Privacy Policy. There is no automated decision-making and no profiling. You always have the right to complain to your local data protection supervisory authority.

If you are in California (CCPA/CPRA)

We have not collected any category of personal information from users of So Why?, in the last twelve months or ever. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. There is no personal information for us to disclose, delete, correct or limit the use of. Exercising any privacy right will never get you a worse version of the app; there are no financial incentives tied to data.

Apple's part

The app relies on Apple for iCloud storage, notification delivery and purchases. What Apple does with that is governed byApple's Privacy Policy, not by this one.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with a new effective date. Since the app collects nothing, a change is likely to be a clarification rather than a new use of your data.
